As self-championed supporters of culture, we like to make sure that Miami is being represented in as well-rounded a way as possible. That means spotlighting the amazing people and places that make this city so special. And we’re talking about the real city, especially the neighborhoods whose identity has evolved drastically in recent years. Like Wynwood. Once a wholesale warehouse stronghold, the neighborhood has seen a makeover in the past decade–transforming into an arts district thanks to visionary developers and determined street artists.
Before Wynwood became one of the most photographed places on the planet, it was primarily an industrial area occupied by car shops and textile warehouses. And before that, the neighborhood was dubbed “Little San Juan” for the large population of Puerto Rican immigrants that chose to call it home. Once Miami’s street artists were displaced from nearby areas and chose to use Wynwood’s bare walls as their canvas, developers like Tony Goldman and Moisha Mana saw value in the budding arts scene and began developing walkable concepts like galleries, bars, retail, and restaurants to transform it into the international destination it is today.
Now, Wynwood is one of the best examples of walkable entertainment in Miami. It’s easy to traverse and is filled with a mix of locally-grown concepts and name-brand spaces ripe for both a tourist’s and local’s picking. So, whenever you have the time to explore its streets–whether on foot or on a bicycle–here’s our hand-picked selection of favorite spots worth checking out:
