We know that the beginning of December is overtaken by everything Art Basel and Miami Art Week, but we’re here to remind you that there’s so much more to experience around town (whether you want to deal with the traffic or not). The first half of December is showing that we’re getting ready to say goodbye to the year in a big way. From community block parties and artisanal markets to holiday-themed events and of course, art fairs, there’s something for everyone these next few weeks. Check it all out:

Sunday, December 1st:

Bayskate Miami – Miami’s favorite waterfront jam on wheels is back! This holiday season, Bayskate has partnered with the first-ever Bayfront Holiday Village at Bayfront Park, and we’re ready to show Rockefeller Center and the world how we rock the holidays in the M-I-A. The best part? We’ll be doing it everyday for an entire month. You heard right. We will be up, open and partying from Thanksgiving weekend all the way through Christmas Day. So polish up those freestyle skating moves, as we are going to shake, shimmy, shuffle, laugh, and get down around the iconic Claude Pepper fountain and the soon-to-be-famous 50-foot tall Village Tree. Whether it’s a day with the family, or night out with friends, get ready to rock a one-of-a-kind Downtown Miami experience.

Cuba, La Hora de La Isla * Amanda Bjorn Photo Exhibit – Amanda Bjorn is an artist and curator based between Miami, Los Angeles, and Havana. Interested in the connection between bodies and space, she works in images, music, films, and movement seeking to build relationships with the fragile world around us. She is currently leading photography and art trips for women artists in various locations in Latin America — Cuba, Guatemala, Mexico, and Panama.

Miami MoCAAD/Lowe Museum Art Week Basel Kickoff – Conversation with artist, Juan Roberto Diago followed by festive reception. The Miami Museum of Contemporary Art of the African Diaspora (Miami MoCAAD) and Lowe Museum will co-sponsor an Art Basel Week Kickoff reception with a conversation that features artist Juan Roberto Diago and Alejandro de la Fuente, curator and founding director, Harvard Afro-Latin American Research Institute. Erica Moiah James, University of Miami Caribbean Art History Professor will moderate the conversation.Diago: The Pasts of this Afro­ Cuban Present is the first retrospective of Juan Roberto Diago (b.1971).

In the Garden – Join &gallery at Miami Ironside for the opening of a special exhibition featuring mixed media works of Miami artist Carol Fryd. Overlapping techniques of collage and digital art, the artists’ subjects are often centered around Miami’s intersecting cultures, colors and unique flora. ‘In the Garden’ is informed by the colorful palette of South Florida and the fertile imagination of the artist who has spent a lifetime embracing her Miami roots.

Wilzig Museum Building Basel Opening Reception  – Start off Miami Art Week at WEAM with the opening reception for there new exhibitions like “The Eroticism of Things”: A pocket watch with a secret rear chamber, a wooden dough scraper, a shiny leather boot, a fresh bread roll – even before Freud, people were attributing erotic qualities to things. “The Eroticism of Things: Collections on the History of Sexuality” traces the material and immaterial production of eroticism. Shape and color, purpose and use, implicit allusions and explicit renderings all make things the stuff of erotic fantasies, while also making them eloquent documents for a cultural history of sexuality.

Geometry is Life by Tim Boin: Miami Art Week 2019 – Known as “The Dutch Master of Light,” Boin’s art is focused on light, geometry, and spirituality. His latest collection, Geometry is Life, is specifically designed as a futuristic, visual sensory experience to capture realism in the subject using geometric designs. Enhanced by natural reflection as well as artificial 3D projection mapping, the collection is showcased in three separate categories, capturing the following elements: Natural Light, Enhanced Light and Artificial Light. More importantly, each artwork captures the balance between geometry, light and the spirit of the subject as if it were to come alive. ‘Geometry is Life’ is a visualization of the connection between geometry and the visual language that arises.

Baker’s Brunch: Open Studios + Cafecito – “Between the legible and the opaque: Approaches to an ideal in place” proposes works of various media that incorporate abstraction as both a formal and conceptual framework to render perceptions of place. The use of abstraction facilitates readings of the process inherent in their making. This process involves elements that reference diverse notions of place – its color, materiality, use of language, and instantaneity as landscape. The summation of these notions, a conversation between the work as a whole and its constituent parts, contributes to varying degrees of legibility and evocativeness.

Art Basel: MOS Fashion Show – Miami on Sight is a community-minded fashion project that places a focus on local talent and sustainability. They will be following up their acclaimed Collins Park show with a new runway presentation at the beautiful Palm Court in the Miami Design District. The event will take place at 7pm on December 8, 2019 with seating starting at 6:30pm. The Sustainable Design Fashion Show will incorporate the venue’s existing art and architecture into the unique performance, including Buckminster Fuller’s Fly’s Eye Dome and the newly installed work, Pink Beasts by Fernando Laposse. Seven designers will each present nine unique runway looks formulated around the evening’s theme of Sustainable Design.

Holliday is best known for her role in the Broadway musical Dreamgirls where her iconic performance of the musical number, “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going”, which then led to her own version of the song catapulted her into national stardom for which she received a Grammy and a Tony Award.

Milonga at The Fountain – We’re transforming the beautiful Normandy Fountain on Rue Vendome into Buenos Aires for a Milonga Under the Stars! DeadPhish Orchestra at The Funky Biscuit – The Deadphish Orchestra is a quartet of Colorado musicians who, above all, are close friends who have played together for many years. They had played Grateful Dead songs together, and they had played Phish songs together. But they got to wondering what would happen if they tried to merge the music of these two bands, the Granddaddies and Daddies of the jamband scene.
