While the fall weather might not be making its way down south fast enough, the autumn festivities sure are. In fact, it’s been a while since we’ve experienced a month so full of things to do, our calendars are bursting. For real, we’re talking all of the reasons to get out of the house and have awesome times with friends. Festivals in tropical gardens, multiple exhibition openings, late night jazz jams, and of course quite the amount of Day of the Dead fiestas. Take a look:

Jared McGriff Artist Talk + Closing Reception – Jared McGriff’s imagined portraits of people play on viewers’ understandings of the lived realities of people who surround them. Jason Fitzroy Jeffers, whose work centers around the stories of individuals with dual and shifting cultural identities, will join McGriff for a conversation exploring questions about the depicted figures in “Alone, Together” and the ambiguous environments within which they reside. The discussion will reveal meanings behind the works and their titles, and examine belonging, individuality, and the nuanced balance between these two concepts.

First Fridays at ICA Miami ft. “Manifest” by Maven Leadership – ICA Miami and Maven Leadership Collective present “Manifest,” an interdisciplinary, site-specific work where artists and audience members collaborate to reveal stories of belonging that amplify the intersections of queerness, color, & gender. Through song, movement, spoken word, artists and audience members collaborate to create a site-specific work that answers the question––what can we be, together?

Martha Wash “The Original Weather Girl” & Shannon – American singer-songwriter Martha Wash will be performing at MDD’s 1st Halloween 80’s Retro Night. Known for her distinctive and powerful voice, Martha Wash first achieved fame as part of the duo The Weather Girls with hits like “It’s Raining Men” and C&C Music Factory’s “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)”. She earned the title of The Queen of Clubland after achieving twelve number-one hits on Billboard’s Dance Chart. Shannon is best known for her string of freestyle and dance-pop hits in the 80’s which include “Give Me Tonight”, “Do You Wanna Get Away” and her gold chart-topping anthem, “Let The Music Play.”

Giralda Under the Stars – November – Downtown Coral Gables is bringing back a neighborhood favorite to Giralda Plaza: Giralda Under the Stars! Raise the Dead – Miami Music Festival – Raise the Dead is a one-day music festival on November 2nd, Dia de Los Muertos. Inspired by its location adjacent to a cemetery, the festival takes attendees on a “journey through mortality” by hosting a celebration of life through remembrance of loved ones who have passed. Attendees will embark on a soul awakening journey through a fusion of music, visual arts and food set over 30 different spaces to explore, each composed of installations made out of completely recycled materials.

To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of Germany, the Miami Institute of Photography is proud to showcase the photo exhibition LATENT FISSURES by Jorge Andrés Castillo. The exhibition consists of the selection of 27 black & white documentary photographs which are part of the artwork developed in Berlin by Venezuelan photographer Jorge Andrés Castillo in 1989.

Haegue Yang Exhibition Opening | Public Reception – Join us for the opening of Haegue Yang’ solo exhibition, ‘In The Cone of Uncertainty.’ Bringing together new and existing works spanning the last decade, the exhibition presents a selection of Yang’s oeuvre ranging from blind installations, anthropomorphic sculptures, light sculptures, and mural-like graphic wallpaper pieces that will explore themes related to identity politics, climate change, notions of movement, displacement and domesticity.

Kate Davis – Jazz darling and Youtube sensation Kate Davis started on violin at age five, moving on to media accolades and performances with Jazz at Lincoln Center and the likes of Ben Folds and Alison Krauss. But in her 20s she turned from familiar accomplishments to writing deeply personal indie rock songs of identity, self-worth, loss and love – now featured on her debut album Trophy.

Egyptian Lover – One of the most innovative producers of the old-school/electro era! Egyptian Lover recorded a parade of singles during the mid-’80s that proved influential for decades. Influenced himself by Kraftwerk/hip-hop soundclashes like Afrika Bambaataa’s “Planet Rock” and Man Parrish’s “Hip-Hop Be Bop (Don’t Stop),” as well as the extroverted black-lover soul of Prince and Zapp, Broussard began recording from his Los Angeles base in 1983.

A Universe of Micky – Friends, neighbors, curiosity seekers! Join us as we celebrate Wolfsonian founder Micky Wolfson’s 80th year and the opening of our new exhibition, “A Universe of Things: Micky Wolfson Collects.” To honor our founder, we’re partnering with City of Miami Beach Government to throw a blowout block party under the stars—complete with food trucks, cash bars, an Airstream lighting activation from Lutron, and a birthday dessert. After experiencing the show inside, take to the street (10th, between Washington and Collins Avenues) for some Micky-worthy pomp and circumstance including fanfare from the FIU Marching Band and a free concert by Nu Deco Ensemble, Miami’s music royalty, to round out the night.
