On The Road II: Opening Reception + Resident Night – On The Road ll is an exhibition series curated by Larry Ossei-Mensah highlighting the works of artists he encounters while traveling around the globe. The exhibition is loosely inspired by Jack Kerouac’s 1957 Beat Generation novel On the Road, which explores the travels of young men across postwar America; the book’s title and historical context galvanize Ossei-Mensah’s interrogation of contemporary issues of mobility, freedom, and identity at a time marked by political and societal unease.

Cultural Camaraderie – Teresita Fernández: Elemental – Teresita Fernández: Elemental offers visitors an unparalleled opportunity to experience numerous works of one of the nation’s leading contemporary artists, and Miami native. The exhibition tells the story of a creator who, through her practice, reflects and challenges perceptions of the natural world and the U.S. social orders, and asks viewers to contemplate their roles with those spaces. The retrospective spans the mid-1990s to the present and includes large-scale sculptures, installations, and mixed media works.

Yayoi Kusama in Miami – ICA Miami presents a special off-site exhibition of artist Yayoi Kusama’s All the Eternal Love I Have for the Pumpkins in the Miami Design District, marking the first time that one of Kusama’s signature “Infinity Mirror Rooms” will be on view in Miami. On view from October 12, 2019 through January 31, 2020, the work features a mesmerizing array of Kusama’s signature spotted pumpkins within a mirror-lined room illuminated with LED lighting. This special presentation is made possible with support from Inigo Philbrick Gallery. All proceeds benefit ICA Miami’s arts education programs.

The Haunted Ballet – The spirits are ready to rise again, at The Barnacle, Oct. 17-20, as Center Street Projects shines a light on those from a bygone era who haunt the lands of The Grove. Guests of the 2019 Haunted Ballet will watch as they dance their stories beneath the moonlit sky and try to escape their tragic endings, night after magical night.

MISO ft YoungArts alumnae Grace Weber & Ashley Támar Davis – The Performance Series returns for the Fall Season, Presented by Baptist Health and produced by Emilio Estefan in collaboration with the Miami Symphony Orchestra (MISO). The October 18th season opener performance will be the Miami Symphony Orchestra conducted by Eduardo Marturet featuring YoungArts alumnae Ashley Tamar Davis and Grace Weber.

Le Filles De Illighadad (tuareg band from Africa) – A stellar African desert rock band in the Tuareg style of bands such as Tinariwen, Bombino, and Mdou Moctar. Fatou Seidi Ghali, lead vocalist and performer of Les Filles is one of the only Tuareg female guitarists in Niger. Les Filles are all from Illighadad, a secluded commune in central Niger, far off in the scrubland deserts at the edge of the Sahara. While Fatou’s role as the first female Tuareg guitarist is groundbreaking, it is just as interesting for her musical direction.

Sex Magic: Masc-querade at WEAM – Come to WEAM for a one-of-a-kind show featuring drag kings, boylesque, and more acts that explore the various dimensions of masculinity. Tarot reader, yogi, witch, and sexually active human Alessandra Calderin hosts a taboo-busting, sex-positive, and magic-making event featuring true stories, confessions, education, burlesque, and a spell or two to wipe away all the shitty shame-walls we tack onto our sex lives in a sexually repressed AND obsessed society.

Bird Walk: Matheson Hammock – The Phoebes’ (all-female birding group) Eliana Ardila Ardila of “Birding By Bus” will lead a bird walk at Matheson Hammock Park. Meet at 7:30am in the parking area at the South end of the park, adjacent to Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden (9610 Old Cutler Road, Coral Gables, FL, 33156). The walk is open to female birders of any experience level. For those without binoculars, Leica Store Miami will provide optics on a first-come, first-served basis. Kitetober Festival – This event is from 12-5pm. The sky over Miami’s Haulover Park will be filled with hundreds of colorful kites including dozens of giant show kites during the Annual Kitetober Fest, 10800 Collins Avenue, Bal Harbour. Live Music on Sat, featuring Miami Country Day High School Rock Ensemble, 21 Hearts, 1 Beat, and A DJ on Sunday. It is the biggest kiting event in Florida. With so many locks to pick, you may wonder who exactly is Susie? Well ask no more. Join Susie as she is hurls through a surreal tribal wonderland when the vapors of time and space transform her into vignettes of major characters in her life thus far. The result is a delightful absurdist drama, ribald and the occasional poignant satire.

Pinecrest Zombie Run – Dodge zombies for 1.3 miles, and then it’s time to party! The Zombie Run and Monster Mash After-Party is on Saturday, 10/19 at 6:15 p.m. We will start at the Pinecrest Community Center and celebrate at Coral Pine Park. There will be a Monster Mash group dance, 40-foot zombie maze, live DJ and more spooky family-fun. Food and beer from Shula Burger, Mr. PB&J, and Snow Caps Shaved Ice will be available for purchase. Viola Visions: New Classic Viola – Viola Visions closes with an epic concert celebrating the power and beauty of the viola. With MTT at the helm, three of the week’s guest artists step into the spotlight to share solo works accompanied by full orchestra. Roberto Díaz performs Jennifer Higdon’s unstoppable Viola Concerto, a work he premiered in 2015 before it won the 2018 Grammy Award for Best Classical Contemporary Composition. Time feels suspended in Morton Feldman’s heavy-hearted The Viola in My Life 4, performed by Cynthia Phelps. In the festival’s grand finale, Tabea Zimmermann gives the world premiere of Steven Mackey’s reimagining of Hector Berlioz’ beloved concerto-symphony hybrid Harold in Italy. Mackey, who will be in attendance, depicts Harold in a new light, elaborating on Berlioz’ colorful themes and adding a new cadenza.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar – Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of this beloved children’s book, Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia reimagining of The Very Hungry Caterpillar follows the wonderful adventures of a very tiny and very hungry caterpillar as he eats his way through an amazing variety of foods on his path to becoming a beautiful butterfly, a Little Cloud who playfully transforms himself into various creatures, and finally The Mixed-Up Chameleon who is bored with his life before coming to the conclusion that there is value in his own unique self.

Locust Projects 2019 Annual Smash & Grab Fundraiser – There is no other fundraiser quite like this one. The lively event revolves around a raffle, for which over one hundred local, national and international artists have donated artwork — enough so that each raffle ticket is guaranteed to win an artwork. Tickets are drawn at random during the party, with the winner getting their choice of artwork (i.e, first called gets first pick, and so on). The result is a fun way to place artwork into collections, build visibility for artists, connect with Miami’s art community, and support Locust Projects.

RAM in Miami Beach – We first knew Haitian ‘voudou rock & roots’ group RAM as the house band from the mythic gingerbread Oloffson Hotel in Port-au-Prince. Led by Richard Morse, a towering ex-NYC New Wave musician who had returned to Haiti (now as a hotelier/voudou priest), RAM’s regular Thursday night shows were legendary. Skip ahead nearly 30 years, and RAM’s shows are still rocking the Oloffson.
