We’ve got a new month on our hands, and if it’s anything like March, April is going to be a whole lot steamier. We’re not talking weather-wise (although that’s already burning up) but culturally, Miami turns up during the Spring and we can’t be more excited. Kicking off with Miami Beach Pride this week, O Miami Poetry Fest all month, Record Store Day, Miami Zine Fair and so many great things to do. Monday, April 1st:

Wake up Miami! – Spring 2019 – PAXy will bring Wake up Miami! to another station this year, University Station in Coral Gables, and, in addition to its regular Summer and Fall Series, there will be a Spring Series for the five Mondays of April, where musicians will delight commuters at 8:30 am at University Station (out of the paid area).

Caged Canary – Faena Bazaar – Sam Heydt – Faena Bazaar is pleased to announce the opening of ‘Caged Canary’, a solo exhibition by social practice + recycled media artist Sam Heydt. Illusion won’t save us from reality, even as the sustained narrative of tabloids becomes history and the myth of progress continues to perpetuate inequality. Yet, these portents are drowned out by the white noise of the media, which lure us in with the empty promises it proposes for the future it truncates. Combining images of destruction with portrayals of the virtues born from the American dream, Heydt confronts its disillusionment with the ecological nightmare it is responsible for.

Pride Lights the Night “Flip the Switch” Event & Reception – Miami Beach Pride will once again pay tribute to the victims, families, and friends of the Pulse nightclub shooting through their third annual “Pride Lights the Night” event produced by Lincoln Road Bid. 2019 will be the 3rd Annual “Flip the Switch” and has become well known throughout the community.

Room of One’s Own: A Teeny Tiny Poetry Residency – Cozy up to a poet! Cozy up to two! While they agonize over every word and line break, you can interact, read along, and witness their creative process.

George Daniell Museum Opening Reception – A new art museum, called the George Daniell Museum, will open in South Beach on April 3. It will feature the full collection of prominent American photographer and artist George Daniell, who worked for Time, Life and Esquire Magazines, and who captured the images of many celebrities (Audrey Hepburn, Sophia Loren, Lena Horne, Georgia O’Keefe, etc), as well as some of the post-war hardship of everyday life in parts of Europe. This is the first time the entirety of his collection will be available for public view.

MOCA Moving Images: Black Power Mixtape – MOCA will screen the documentary Black Power Mixtape (2011), this documentary examines the evolution of the Black Power movement in American society from 1967 to 1975 as viewed through Swedish journalists and filmmakers.

IlluminArts presents Jewel Box: A musical celebration of queer diversity – IlluminArts and Bulthaup present an evening of storytelling through design, art and music. “Vivid and expressive” (New York Times) baritone Keith Phares and pianist Ting-Ting Wong perform music of composers celebrating the diversity of the queer experience, including Laura Kaminsky, Jake Heggie, Paula Kimper and Benjamin Britten. Original artwork inspired by the musical program and created by Sebastian Duncan-Portuondo will highlight the elegant design of the Bulthaup b Solitaire. Speculative Machine III: Hard Evidence – Speculative Machine III: Hard Evidence: The Visibilities and Invisibilities of a Changing Climate. Dr. Brian J. Tabdeeli: Performance + Artist Talk with Qinza Najm – Tabdeeli, meaning “transformation” in Urdu, is a performance exploring cultural, political, and personal displacement. Notions of resisting, pushing against, and transcending barriers, taboos, and social and political norms are expressed through the dancers, who stretch and struggle within the translucent fabric constricting their movements.

Miami Pride at Glossier – On Friday April 5th, Glossier will be hosting an event to celebrate Miami Pride, with performances by Kat Wilderness and other surprise guests from 7-9pm. 50% of sales from this event (7-9pm) will be donated to Lambda Legal, the oldest and largest legal defense organization fighting for the rights of LGBTQ people and everyone living with HIV. The Class by Taryn Toomey – The Class by Taryn Toomey is a practice of self-study through physical conditioning. Miami Beach Pride Festival – Nowhere is the spirit of Pride and enthusiasm more apparent than during the extraordinary two-day Festival on Saturday and Sunday that features two stages with world-class DJs, entertainers, and celebrity entertainers. This is a FREE festival! Special surprise performances throughout the day, along with 125 vendor booths, food and cocktails at Lummus Park in world-famous South Beach. 2019 Miami Zine Fair – Join EXILE for the 2019 Miami Zine Fair at the Little Haiti Cultural Complex on April 6th and 7th from 12 to 5 p.m! You read that right, it’s two whole days this year! Celebrate our city’s dynamic print culture with us, and explore zines and books from an expanse of independent publishers, small presses, and local zinesters alike. There’ll be performances, workshops, and events throughout the day that we’ll be announcing periodically through here. The fair is free and open to the public!

Tour Tropical Audubon’s Doc Thomas House – The historic home will be open to the public between 12:30pm & 4pm, with guided tours taking place at 1pm & 3pm. Visit the historic Doc Thomas House for a captivating, 45-minute guided tour led by a Tropical Audubon Society docent. Learn about the Birds’ benefactor Arden Hayes “Doc” Thomas and Robert Fitch Smith, the architect Thomas commissioned to design the house. Performance: Jibade Khalil Huffman and Def. Sound – Jibade-Khalil Huffman and musician and artist Def Sound present a one-night performance for the finale of Huffman’s “_____________” MEANS “I LOVE YOU” IN ITALICS, a multi-venue evolving project presented as part of the Art on the Move series of art in public spaces. Huffman and Def Sound will present a new work connected to a recent performance and accompanying music video they recently performed at the inaugural Freize LA. This new performance will utilize the same promotional video installed on advertising trucks that Huffman used in December during Art Week Miami in the Design District, Wynwood and on Miami Beach, along with other tropes of hip-hop music videos.

NWS Wallcast Concert: Making Mozart – All NWS WALLCAST® Concerts in the 2018-19 season are presented by Citi. Getting Dirty: A Plant-based Writing Workshop – Writing is much like gardening with words. Attire: Clothes to get dirty in and closed toed shoes. This workshop will be led by poet and instructor Carmella de los Angeles Guiol at the Little River Cooperative Farm and will include a hands-on gardening activity followed by a flash writing experience. Pride Parade – Starting at 12pm on April 7, 2019, the length of Ocean Drive along the Art Deco district will be closed to traffic and open wide to our proud South Florida LGBTQ families, our friends, co-workers and allies – along with Pride sponsor organizations, groups and businesses.

Doors Of Perception – A trip into Miami’s new underground psychedelic arts scene. Featuring Miami’s premier psychedelic rock bands, live visual artists, performance art, and more.
