Upstairs from Calle Ocho’s most famous taqueria, Taquerias el Mexicano there’s a new hidden gem that will take you by surprise. If you can find it, that is. Los Altos is an intimate, upscale cocktail lounge and bar founded by Madroom Hospitality (Ball & Chain) that draws inspiration from the cultural heritage of Mexico. From the drinks to the authentic, imported décor, Los Altos is already an instant crowd pleaser.
Through a fake wall in a Mexican candy shop, you’ll fawn over the dark, swanky decor featuring plush elements like velvet-draped banquettes, leather seating, a gold leaf adorned ceiling and a sleek concrete-topped bar. All elements of design are meant to be a tribute to the beauty and culture of Mexico, directly sourced from the motherland, including re-purposed doors that came from an abandoned church, vintage hardwood floors, stained glass window accents, hand-stitched furniture, and even the hand-painted bathroom fixtures.
The cocktail menu was created in collaboration with mixology maestro Erik Gaytan, whose famous Mexican cocktails can be found at the most well-known cocktail bar in Oaxaca. “We wish to provide our guests with an authentic Mexican experience and a taste of unique cocktails that are in the spirit of what they would find upon their travels in Mexico,” says co-owner Zack Bush. Guests can expect a creative, high-end mix of mezcal and tequila concoctions such as the “Oaxaca al Pastor” made with Los Altos reposado tequila, Ancho Verde, honey, lime, and cilantro or the “Sayulita” featuring Sombra mezcal, mango, carrot, habanero, ginger and fresh lime.
