We might be two weeks into 2019, but so much has happened and so much is still yet to come. Wednesday, January 16th:

Drawing Salon – Drawing Salons offer an opportunity to develop artistic skills while sitting in a relaxing gallery environment. ScreenDance Miami 2019: Creative Process – In this workshop explore ways to maximize your film-shoot. Learn how to design your film-composition, including your beginning and end camera movement, so you can seamlessly edit your project. Work with one camera take (single-shot) and learn how to create and prepare, with the edit in mind, and learn strategies to make our films more fluid, without the need to rely on the editing process to fix mistakes.

Dancing in the Absence of Pain: Opening + Resident Night – Opening night of Terence Price II’s first solo show, “Dancing in the Absence of Pain,” curated by Diana Nawi with Angelica Arbelaez. The exhibition emerges from a tradition of street photography to document the people closest to Price II. An intimate exploration of life in Miami Gardens, Florida, Price combines his photography with an arrangement of archival family footage and collected artifacts to reflect the black experience in Miami across private and public spaces, over generations.

Cinema Trivia Night – Fan-favorite Cinema Trivia Night returns in collaboration with Ella’s Oyster Bar! I’m Not Gonna Move to LA Championship – FilmGate Miami wraps up our best season of NOLA yet with the 2018 Championship! Mdou Moctar – Mdou Moctar is poised to become the next big guitar hero in African Tuareg music, following in the footsteps of Tinariwen and Bombino, his fellow countryman. Mdou Moctar hails from Niger in West Africa. After underground success with his first release, the psychedelic Anar he was featured on the Sahel Sounds compilation Music from Saharan Cellphones and has gone on to release several acclaimed albums. He is one of the few original Tuareg singer/songwriters willing to experiment and push the boundaries of the genre at home and abroad.

MLK Weekend at Camp Mahachee – Give a day of service and celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day by joining #LINCMiami, #YoungLeadersMiami and #WomenUnitedMiami members for a beautification project benefiting the Girl Scouts of Tropical Florida, a United Way-funded agency. Volunteers will repaint and beautify exterior common areas at Camp Mahachee, an 11-acre site nestled in the hammocks off of Old Cutler, which provides the Girl Scout troops a camp site they can enjoy year-round.

Dance Theatre of Harlem – The groundbreaking black classical dance troupe, whose visit last season – after a nearly 20-year absence – was such a powerful artistic and community event, returns to the Center. Annual MISO Concert in Collins Park – FREE and open to the public! A special edition of Family Day and extended hours until 6 PM. Bring a blanket, a picnic basket and enjoy the orchestral sounds of The Miami Symphony Orchestra (MISO) under the direction of Eduardo Marturet in picturesque Collins Park, just in front of the museum. Plus, free family art activities will be available during the concert.

Wednesday, January 30th:

Exhibition Opening – In “LaToya Ruby Frazier: Flint is Family,” Frazier explores at the level of community, the effects of the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, where Black residents make up 54% of the population. Frazier spent five months in 2016 living with three generations of women—the poet Shea Cobb, Shea’s mother, Renée Cobb, and her daughter, Zion—observing their day-to-day lives as they endured one of the most devastating ecological crises in US history. Citing Gordon Parks’S and Ralph Ellison’s 1948 collaboration Harlem is Nowhere as an influence, Frazier utilized mass media as an outlet to reach a broad audience. In September 2016, she published her images of Flint in Elle magazine in conjunction with a special feature on the water crisis. Like Parks, Frazier uses the camera as a weapon and agent of social change.
